Axe - is one of the most ancient tools used by a man and later also a weapon. It could be found already in the Palaeolithic Era. Discovery of bronze and later of iron brought another improvement in the form of cast axes, and later also forged ones. Surprisingly, ancient Greeks and Romans never used combat axes as they thought they were “barbarian” weapons. But among “barbarians”, such as Franks, Merovigians, Celts, Lombards and Vikings, it was popular. In Central Europe, the type called francisca became common, while in the North the type with a lunette blade was more frequent which we know from the later medieval type of “berdiche” axes.
